Out With The Old, In With The .... Same?
Friday, 06 September 2013 21:06

The opening to Purdue's 2013 season and Darrell Hazell's tenure at Purdue ended the same way most of the games under Danny Hope ended - with a loss that showcased very little positives.  The Associated Press recap of the game said it best.  "Purdue (0-1) got a whole new offense under Darrell Hazell, who came from Kent State to try to get the Boilermakers moving up in the Big Ten. The first time out, the offense couldn't get out of its own way. It was Purdue's worst season opener since a 52-14 loss at Michigan State in 1996.  The Boilermakers had false-start penalties and a delay of game. Fifth-year quarterback Rob Henry got run over by a pulling guard, causing a fumble. One time, Henry turned to hand the ball off and there was no one there with open arms. Another time, he fumbled the snap and had to fall on it.  Then there was his severe overthrow to Shane Mikesky that Adrian Witty ran back 41 yards for a touchdown that made it 28-7 midway through the third quarter. Oops."

In other words ... poor play making, poor discipline, unnecessary penalties and rookie mistakes by veteran players.  Hallmarks of Coach Hope.

We get it that this roster is all handpicked by Hope.  But they were supposed to win it all last year, so this team should have been marginally good.  This Purdue should beat Indiana State.  A good team should embarrass ISU.  After that, Purdue enters a gauntlet that will define the season for the Boilermakers.  We're not very positive right now.
